WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A HOME

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of buying a home. However, if you don’t consider some fundamental elements early in the buying process, your house could turn into a money pit that slowly drains your positive attitude and your bank account. Here are some things to consider when buying a home.

LIFESTYLE

It’s important to ensure that your house will accommodate your current needs and your future needs as well. If you expect your lifestyle to change within the next few years – by starting a family, working from home, having a parent move in, etc. – you must take these considerations into account when making your decision.

DEAL BREAKERS

It’s important that you know what your deal breakers are before you go shopping. Is a big backyard an absolute must? Do you need an office space, or an extra bedroom for a growing family? Knowing exactly what your “must haves” or deal breakers are ahead of time will make the home buying process easier.

SURROUNDINGS

When buying a house, look at more than the building. It’s important to consider its surroundings. Make sure the area isn’t prone to flooding or other natural disasters. Is the home near a highway? If so, you’ll need to consider the constant traffic noise. Is the driveway easy to get into and out of, and how far is it from the entrance? If there’s fencing, ensure that it’s stable and not posted on the neighbour’s property or the property line. If you have children, you’ll want to ensure that the landscape is safe and child-friendly.

LOOK AT THE LITTLE THINGS

While they may seem like little things when shopping for a home, mundane items like storage spaces and ceiling fans can make a huge difference. Look for things like light switches, electrical outlets or other small comforts that you may not miss until you move in.

Determining what you want in a home is the very first step in the buying process. Otherwise, you may end up wasting your time looking at homes that won’t make you happy. For most, this means putting together a wish list.
